This series of drawings is a result of friend lending me some of his antique fishing lure collection. I was fascinated by the wonderful textures and patina; they're like miniature sculptures. Being that when I'm not drawing or collecting insects, I'm fishing (or at least thinking about it), I thought I would draw a few and decided on using the pen and ink technique known as "stippling" (creating the image with thousands of tiny ink dots). A few led to a few more and it kinda just snowballed because they were so much fun. After I completed the ink drawing, I added color with pastel pencils, burnishing them into the surface of the paper.
I really enjoyed stippling these old fishing lures and I hope you enjoy them as well. Maybe you have an old lure from your grandfather's tackle box that you would like to commission me to draw? My technique does take a little time (all those tiny dots), but a commissioned original would make a very special gift! If you would like to do this, contact me for a specific quote, but understand that I cannot do these overnight, so please allow for sufficient time.
